You've had this moment before.

You're in the stairwell. Your neighbor says something simple in Swedish. You understand them. But before your answer arrives, the moment passes. You smile, and you switch to English.

That moment has a name, because we gave it one. After years of watching it in thousands of students, we call it the Waiting Gap: the narrow window between hearing Swedish and responding to it while someone stands there, waiting. No Swedish course trains it.

When we first wrote about the Waiting Gap publicly, this comment arrived:

"People ask why I don't speak more Swedish and I never know how to answer (in English or in Swedish), but this is exactly it. So it has a name, the Waiting Gap. That helps to know it's not just me!

It happens to me all the time. It's so frustrating because as soon as I walk away my mind literally races with all the things I could have said, but just couldn't conjure up the Swedish in the moment.

So, how do we overcome it?"

This guide is first aid for that moment. It keeps you in today's conversation. Training the Waiting Gap itself takes more than a PDF, but this is where it starts.

“Your Swedish is there. It just arrives after the pressure leaves. That is not a knowledge problem. That is a moment you can train.”

Bojana, co-founder

Most Swedish teachers have never had to learn Swedish. We have.

We're Bojana and Natalia, certified Swedish teachers (legitimerade lärare i svenska som andraspråk). We learned Swedish as adults, in Sweden, and we froze in the same moments you do now.

Over 22 years and 3,000+ students from more than 100 countries, we kept seeing this one moment decide whether people use their Swedish or hide it. We named it so it can be trained. The five moves in this guide are where that training starts.

“I stayed in Swedish with a dad at my son's handball, even though he spoke a dialect I could barely follow. Before, I would have switched to English right away. I am not switching anymore.”
